I made this as a gift to my best friend for Christmas. I ordered a gift for him on ebay about 3 weeks ago, and it hasn't shipped yet. So I whipped this up for him to make up for it
As I hope many of you can tell, this illustration is based on the infamous original Charizard pokemon card, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita.
From start to finish, I estimate this took about 4 hours. I used multiple shading techniques as a means of differentiating between colors. I tried adding sparkles in the background to give it more of a holographic look.
This was so much fun to make. It came as a big surprise to me to see that the size of the window for an illustration in a pokemon card is pretty much the same as the ratio of the window you etch in for a pocket etch a sketch. What a wonderful surprise that was!
My friend's been sleeping for over 16 hours now, and I can't wait to show him Merry belated Christmas everyone!
EDIT: updated with a better photo, after retouching post-preservation
